Mississippi Mission 6

 Frequently Asked Questions

Where are we going? We are going to Camp Coast Care in Long Beach, Miss., on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Our mission effort is part of the Lutheran Episcopal Disaster Response in partnership with the Diocese of Mississippi and supported by Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD).

When is the 6th trip?  We have planned two one-week sessions: Week 1 is September 14-20 and Week 2 is September 21-27. Most people go for one week, but you are welcomed and needed if you can stay for the second week also. You must be over 16 years old. If this time is not convenient, individuals or small groups may go at any time. Camp Coast Care staff are grateful for help anytime and you can represent the diocese just as well as a large group can. The diocesan groups will be limited to 25 each week.

What is the mission? Camp Coast Care focuses on construction and rebuilding efforts in the communities of Gulfport, Long Beach, and Pass Christian. Specific needs are for skilled labor (framing, wall board installation & finishing, electrical, plumbing, roofing, painting) and helpers knowledgeable or willing to learn construction skills. Workers are also needed at Camp Coast Care to support the work crews by doing on-campus jobs such as kitchen and dining room assistants, office/administrative help and tool shop organization and distribution. The main talents needed are flexibility and a willingness to work. On-the-job training is available. Attending workshops at building supply stores (Home Depot, Lowes, etc.) and work on Habitat for Humanity type projects is great training for learning necessary skills.

How do we register? First, call or email (preferred) Skip or Sandy Wrightson (410-822-0205 or skipwrightson@hughes.net) and let them know you want to go. Then click on this link to Camp Coast Care, scroll down the page to "Registration Form" and "Liability Waiver," print them out, complete them, and mail the forms to the Wrightsons at 28522 Almshouse Rd., Oxford, MD 21654.

How do we get there? Flying into Gulfport-Biloxi Airport is recommended. Make your own reservations. Many people rent cars, but pick-up can also be arranged. The drive is approximately 1180 miles from Easton to Long Beach and requires at least two days.
