Here at Sanctuary House in Upper Fairmount,
Maryland, where
Sisters of the Community of the Ascension live, phone calls often mean
a police officer's voice. "Sister, we've got another injured
bird.
Can I bring it right over?"
We
also get calls from bird owners who no longer want or can care for
their
pets. It doesn't matter, we take them in. Seagulls, wild
parrots,
tame cockatoos, and most anything else that flies. One of
our
Sisters is licensed by the state of Maryland to care for injured
wildlife.
While they're with us we love these members of God's creation,
treat
them with dignity and respect, care for their injuries, and as soon as
possible release the wild animals to continue their
lives on this beautiful strip of land between the Atlantic Ocean and
Chesapeake
Bay.
We call our home Sanctuary House. It is a place where
not only
humans but also animals may find peace, rest, and safety. Part of
the Sisters' daily work is the care not only of God's people but also
the
care of God's animals.
